Dr Vivek Mehta FRCA MD FFPMRCA

Dr Vivek Mehta is Consultant in Pain and Neuromodulation at St Bartholomew’s Hospital since 2006 and Honorary Reader at Queen Mary University, London. He is the Director of Pain Research Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London, Clinical Network Director for Pain at Barts Health NHS Trust, and recipient of National Bronze Award 2021. He is Co-Director for Education Program in Neuromodulation (EEPIN), with international faculty collaboration from Europe, India, Australia and US and the Co- Program Director for the first Post Graduate Certification (PGCert) in neuromodulation with QMUL affiliation. He has been appointed as the Vice- Chair for the Examinations for Fellowship of Faculty of Pain Medicine, Royal College of Anaesthetists (2022).

He has a strong academic footprint, as one of the very few NHS based clinical academics in the country. In last five years as a Chief Investigator, he had academic grants, 14 research projects, >£1.75 M grant, 5 visiting fellows, >60 academic papers. He has authored pain chapters in Bailey and Love, for three successive editions, the largest selling textbook in surgery in the world. His key achievements included his research on multifidus stimulation for low back pain (top abstract award) INS World Congress, Edinburgh, 2017 being reported in Times, BBC radio, Daily Mail & Channel 4.

In recognition he was appointed visiting Professor at PGI Chandigarh, India (2018). He is primary supervisor for successful PhDs (2019 and 2021). He assesses 2000 chronic pain patients a year (400 new, 350 tertiary care multidisciplinary referrals, 40% out of area). He performed on average 860 complex injection procedures a year. He developed the Neuromodulation Centre at Barts Health in 2014. This has evolved into one of the biggest centres of academia & training in Europe (He performs 120 implants a year, one of the highest amongst peers in Europe and US). He has been a faculty for cadaver workshop courses at Budapest and Oxford teaching and mentoring colleagues in these techniques, besides proctoring complex pain procedures including percutaneous spinal cord stimulators, occipital nerve stimulator implants besides pulsed and traditional radiofrequency techniques. He is supervisor for the London Deanery Advanced Pain Training and Commonwealth Fellowship. His contributions have been recognised by International Neuromodulation Society (INS) and he has been incorporated in the Research and Scientific Oversight, Interim Meetings, Biennial Congress Program, Public Education, Outreach & Website committees of the INS and Education Committee at North American Neuromodulation Society.

He has been providing medicolegal examinations and reports since 2012 and his medicolegal areas of expertise include whiplash injury, back and neck pain, complex regional pain syndrome & neuromodulation and complex pain conditions.

Dr Mehta has joined Pain Expert in October 2023 and is available to take on claimant, defendant and joint instructions in chronic pain cases.
